Playoff Sunday!
With the conclusion of Saturday's games, the WRBHA Provincial Championship playoff matchups are now set across all 6 divisions.
On the Women's side, the B division saw three teams play to a 2-1 record. After running through the different tie-breaker scenarios, the EDM Asylum White earned 1st place and a bye to the finals. This means the CGY Vipers and CGY Tune Squad will square off at 10:30 am to determine who will be joining the Asylum. During the round robin, the Vipers beat the Tune Squad 1-0.
Over in the C division, the EDM Storm finished the round-robin at a perfect 3-0 and will meet up with the EDM Boom (1-2). The other semi-final will see a pair of 2-1 teams, the EDM Stillettos and CGY Elite Pumas, going head-to-head for the right to play in the gold medal finals. Both semi-final matchups (9:00 am) are the first meetings between the respective clubs in this year's tournament.
Switching to Men's side, the EDM Savages cruised to the top spot in the Tier 1 division...going undefeated through their three round robin games will racking up 18 goals for to just 2 goals against. The EDM Nighthawks (2-1) and CGY Phantoms (1-2) will slug it out in the semi-finals (12:00 pm) for the right to get a second chance at the Savages. The Nighthawks previously took down the Phantoms 7-4 in their round robin meeting.
The Tier 2 division also saw a team run the table, with the EDM Cobras pulling off a 4-0 record. They will await the winner of the semi-final game between the EDM Killer Bees (3-1) and the EDM Walruses (2-2) which is set to start at 10:30 am. The Killer Bees were victorious in their round robin matchup vs the Walruses, winning by a score of 4-0.
Pool A of Tier 3 saw three teams finish up the round robin at 2-1. Unfortunately for the CGY Blazers, the tie-breakers did not go in their favour...as they missed out on the playoff cut. The Beverly Bullies wound up atop the standings and will crossover to play the EDM Edge (2-1) who snuck in thanks to a 4-1 victory over the GP Cobras in final game of the round robin. The Sherwood Park Ball Hogz topped Pool B at 3-0 and draw the high-flying Medicine Hat Rebels (2-1) in the other semi-final. The Rebels led all teams in Tier 3 with 20 goals scored in just three games. Both semi-finals are set for a 10:30 am start.
Finally, the Tier 4 division...which also features crossover semi-finals. In the A Pool, the Drunken Monkeys faced little resistance on their way to a perfect 3-0 mark. They scored 16 goals to just 2 against. They will face off against the 2nd place EDM Silver Kings from the B Pool. The Silver Kings edged out both the CGY Rink Rats and EDM Wolfpack in tie-breakers to earn the playoff berth. Atop the B Pool were the EDM Reapers, who also finished with an undefeated record of 3-0. They will have to try and go through the Fort McMurray Vullets who finished 2nd in the A Pool...thanks to a 2-1 round robin record. Both of these semis get underway bright and early, at 9 am.
